What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code is a QR code whose destination you can change anytime, without reprinting the code. It works because the QR itself encodes a short redirect URL (yours will be littleqr.co/abc1234) — not your real destination. When someone scans it, we redirect them to whatever URL you’ve currently set. You update the destination through your edit link; the next scan goes to the new URL.

This is why dynamic QRs are the right choice for anything that outlives a day — printed flyers, business cards, product labels, museum placards, conference lanyards, real-estate signage. You’re not locked in by whatever URL you put on day one.

Dynamic vs. static QR codes

Both do the same thing when scanned (they open a URL) but they work differently under the hood.

Dynamic

  • Encodes a short URL (redirects through littleqr.co)
  • Destination editable anytime
  • Scan analytics included
  • Can be disabled if printed in error
  • Shorter = denser = scans more reliably on small print

Static

  • Encodes your destination URL directly
  • Cannot be changed after printing
  • No analytics, no server dependency
  • Longer destination = denser QR
  • Works even if we disappear tomorrow

Use the toggle in the generator to switch modes. If you’re not sure, pick dynamic — you can always share the short URL directly too, so you’re not giving anything up.

Save your edit link

Each dynamic QR code comes with a one-time edit link that works like a password. Anyone with the link can change where your QR points, so keep it private. It’s also the only way you can edit the QR later — we don’t store it and there’s no recovery flow. If you lose it, the QR keeps redirecting forever but you won’t be able to change the destination.

Our recommendation: paste it into a password manager, email it to yourself, or save it to a bookmark right after you create the QR.

What you can’t use it for

No phishing, malware, scams, illegal content, or brand impersonation. We use Google Safe Browsing, human review, and community reports — codes that violate our policy get disabled and their creators get blocked from future creation.

Found a QR code being misused? Report it here. We review every report and usually action them within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change a QR code after it's been printed?

Yes — that's exactly what a dynamic QR code is for. The printed QR encodes a short URL (littleqr.co/yourcode), not your final destination. You can update the destination anytime through your edit link, and the next scan will go to the new URL. You never need to reprint.

What's the difference between a dynamic and a static QR code?

A static QR encodes your destination URL directly into the image — simple, works offline, but the destination can never change. A dynamic QR encodes a short redirect URL; we redirect it to your real destination. You can update that destination anytime, see scan counts, or disable the code if needed. Dynamic is almost always what you want if the QR is going on anything that outlives a day.

Is this really free? What's the catch?

Genuinely free. No signup, no account, no credit card, no watermark, no expiry, no scan limit. We don't even ask for your email. The only 'catch' is that we rely on your edit link being saved — if you lose it, we can't recover it, because we only store a one-way hash for security.

How long will my QR code keep working?

Forever, as long as it isn't disabled for abuse. We treat QR codes as permanent because we know you'll print them on things that outlive us all. Even if littleqr.co ever changed hands, active codes would stay active.

Do I need an account to create a QR code?

No. The whole point is that you don't. You get an edit link when you create your QR — save it somewhere you'll find it (password manager, email it to yourself) and you can come back anytime to update the destination.

How do scan analytics work?

Every scan generates an anonymous event — country, device type, timestamp. You see aggregate counts on the edit page. We don't log individual scanner IPs or anything that could identify specific people.

Can I use this for business?

Yes. Event flyers, product labels, business cards, museum exhibits, restaurant menus, conference lanyards — anything where you might want to change the destination later without chasing down printed material. It's free for commercial use.
